Birtish Heart Foundation Photo Competition

2 12 2009

The British Heart Foundation are holding their first annual Digital Photography Competition. Here are the details;

The theme of the competition is Red for Heart and the winning images will be showcased as part of National Heart Month in February.  There are some fantastic prizes to be won, including the once in a lifetime opportunity for a one-day shoot shadowing an award winning Getty photographer for the winner of the Student category.

There will also be an exhibition of the finalists as part of the National Heart Month launch outside the London Eye, and a selection of the winners also be published in the Independent on Sunday Newspaper. We are directing people to bhf.org.uk/redphotos to find out more and to enter.  Closing date for entries is 6th January 2010 and we have a fantastic team of judges to select the winners.

I promised to attach the document I have that has some generic poses for models, but it is too large, so you can download it here: Poses. It is useful for simple stuff, and then you can use your imagination to add to the poses :) Hope you guys find it helpful.

Newsletter! 1st December 2009

1 12 2009

Hello everyone!

Hope you’ve all had a fab weekend and you’re looking forward to CHRISTMAS!! (Definitely not too early to be excited…)

Talking of Christmas, the Snow Ball is fast approaching and we have a cool photoshoot lined up beforehand in Rutherford Bar, Saturday December 5th from 6pm til 9pm in order to capture some good shots of everyone looking amazing, so bring your friends along for pre-drinking and posing! As with the Halloween shoot, photographers and models are more than welcome to come and help out.

Models:

This week we have our regular meeting on Tuesday, 7pm in the Peter Bird Room, Eliot. We want these meetings to be about what you guys want to learn, so we would greatly appreciate any suggestions and ideas that you may have for what you want the sessions to include! Email us at ukcphoto@gmail.com

Photographers:

A big thanks to all the photographers who came on the London Exhibition trip – it was a blast!

This week we will be practising a technique known as ‘Painting with Light’, where one leaves the shutter open for an extended amount of time to create some interesting effects. Please bring your camera equipment and a tripod if you have one. Also, please bring different types of lights to play with, such as lazer pointers, Christmas lights, etc. Anything that you think will allow you to get some funky effects!

We will be meeting in Seminar Room 1, on both Tuesday at 6:30pm and Wednesday at 5pm, and then we may move outside if it’s not too wet…

Competition:

This week’s winner is Nayra with ‘Time Froze’! This week’s competition topic is ‘black and white’ and the deadline is the 4th December.

Trips:

Don’t forget our next trip is to Wingham Zoo on the 12th December – more details will be available closer to the time.

Photography Opportunities:

We have quite a few photography opportunities for our members that have come up this week:

1) Photographer for the Snow Ball – RAG has asked if anyone is interested in taking photos during the Snow Ball on December 5th in the balcony bar of people in their gowns and suits! We are aware that we are already doing so in Rutherford Bar, but the photographer that is present at the Snow Ball will be able to share the profit with RAG.

2) The Department of Medieval and Early Modern Studies are looking for a photographer to be present at their postgrad conference on Thursday 3rd December from 9:45am-6pm plus evening events at Canterbury Cathedral from 6:30pm until 7:45pm. The time slot they want a photographer the most is lunch and cartoon exhibition (12-1:30pm). Attached is the programme for the day. If you are interested, do let us know! They are offering to pay whatever rate you normally offer.

3) Kent Dance are hosting a charity showcase on Wednesday 2nd December from 7pm in the Venue. You will be shooting for charity so you will not be able to make a profit, but it is a great opportunity to gain experience in event/performance photography.

If you are interested in any of these, please email Mikey at mar35@kent.ac.uk and he will help you out!

Apologies for the massively long email, but there was a lot to tell you guys!!

Loveage,
Hannah

Workshop:

This week the models and photographers will be coming together for a photoshoot! The models will be practising the poses they learnt during last week’s meeting, while the photographers will be learning how to direct the models to get the desired pose.

Models who assist will help make those getting their photos taken feel confident about having their photo taken, while the photographers will help take the photographs. The shoot is going on between 11am and 4pm in Rutherford Bar, you may come at any time and stay for as long as you can!

Models, you can also take this opportunity to get some good portfolio pictures so make sure you dress appropriately!

Newsletter! 7th November 2009

7 11 2009
Hello my lovelies!

Hope everyone is having a sparkly weekend! :-) We have LOTS of news for everyone this week!

Models:

We had the first round of Fashion Show auditions last week – it was a great turnout and lots of people came along, so if you don’t want to miss out on being part of the Fasion Show, get yourself along to this week’s round of auditions! They will be held this coming Tuesday 10th, come along anytime between 7pm and 10pm, in the Peter Bird Room, Eliot!

Models remember that being part of the society does not give you automatic entry into the Fashion Show!!! Some remember to come and audition.

Due to the auditions, there will yet again be no meeting for the models this week, apologies guys.

From 23rd – 27th November, Kent Union will be running a ‘Love Your Body’ campaign which intends to help people to focus on being comfortable with their own skin, along with sexual health awareness and debating current issues on ‘body image’. We are holding a photo shoot day in Rutherford Bar on the 26th November in conjunction with this campaign, so would be great to see lots of you models there! :-) The shoot is open to anyone, so it would be great if we could have some members of the modelling society to help them out with their posing. Email us if you are interested! ukcphoto@gmail.com

We have had interest from you guys about some general photo shoots, so if anyone has any ideas for a shoot, send us an email and let us know.

Also a bit of bad news, but unfortunately Bekki has stepped down from her position as Modelling Vice President due to personal issues. For the time being, the rest of the committee will be assisting Dan where necessary and we will update everyone in due course about any further decisions from the committee.

Photographers:

The photos from the Halloween Social are now up! To view them, please visit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/mikeyrap/sets/72157622735463912/

Workshop
This week you are back in the darkroom, and this time you are learning how to develop your own film.
Even if you did not get a chance to take and photographs with a film camera, still come along to learn the process, you never know when you may need the knowledge. Please meet at the darkroom at 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 5 p.m. on Wednesday PROMPT. If you are to late you will not be allowed into the darkroom, as we not be able to let any light in during the process. If you do not know where the darkroom is, give Mikey a call on 07597506929.

Photography Competition.
We have finally organised an appropriate system! Voting for last weeks competition begun on Friday, and a new topic has begun. While voting for the last topic goes on, the submissions for the next topic will be open at the same time. Voting can be done on the website (link at the end of the newsletter)

This weeks topic is purple. We ask that when you submit your photo that you also submit a topic for next week that will be used if your photography wins!
