Newsletter! 8th February 2010

Hola beautiful people!!

Here is this week’s news, hot off the press….. :-P

Trip: (please read all!)

As it stands, we have 3 cars for the trip to Dungeness, all of which are booked – thanks to those who are driving! Unfortunately, there will not be any minibus training before the trip, but thanks to those who offered.

There is now no space left in the cars, as i received an equal amount of emails from those interested when i asked in the middle of last week. However, if anyone else with access to a car decides they can come along, then let Mikey know (Mikey – mar35@kent.ac.uk) so that i can let everyone else know that there are new places. Also, if anyone who said they are coming on the trip cannot make it, let me know as soon as you find out so i can open it up to other members.

We will be meeting in Eliot car park at 11am on Saturday 13th Feb! Please bring:

1) A packed lunch (there is practically nowhere to get food in this area, from my understanding)
2) Appropriate gear for the weather
3) Petrol money for the drivers (about £2 each)
4) Models – whatever clothes and shoes you would like to wear during shoots
5) Photographers – appropriate amount of equipment depending on whether you are shooting the models or the landscape

Social:

This Friday 12th Feb we will be having a social to the Silent Disco at Venue! This is a really fun night and would be a great opportunity to bring friends and mingle with everyone else in the society! I will be creating a Facebook group with details so we will let you know finalities nearer the time. Come, it’s going to be fun!!

Photo shoot:

As you have all heard, next week there are no workshops, but instead a society photo shoot. We will be meeting in Eliot Seminar Room 1 on Tuesday at 6:30pm before we start shooting for a brief. The theme of the photoshoot is ‘masquerade’, in aid of decorating Darwin College for their Masquerade Ball on the 20th Feb. Therefore, if anyone (photographers or models) has masks that can be used on this shoot, that will be of great help although we will be providing a few ourselves. The shoot will take place around Eliot College.

Hoodies:

Prices for hoodies are £20, which is a pretty decent price compared to other societies! But before we put them on order, we would like to know if you would pay £15 for a t-shirt (on top of a hoody)? There will be a poll up on the website for quick and easy voting (link is at the end of the newsletter)

The hoodies will be grey with black writing, with a large logo at the back, and a small logo with your name and position (photographer/model) on the front right and t-shirts will be black with white writing!

You have one week to vote, then a decision will be made… Hoodies (and possibly t-shirts) will be available to order from next week.

Models:

Fashion Show rehearsals are going really well – just a quick reminder for those who haven’t paid, you need to be a paid member to take part in the show!!! We do know who has paid and who hasn’t, so get yourselves down to Mandela with £5!

Competition 1:

The winner of the last competition of ‘Nostalgia’ is Gloda with ‘Memories’. Unfortunately, no photos were submitted for last week’s competition, so we will create a topic for the next competition. The topic for the current competition is ‘Cardboard’. Deadline is the 12th Feb.

Competition 2: (Fashion Show poster)

Every year there is a competition for the Fashion Show poster, and last year it was between the models so this year it is between the photographers! The photographers have to design and submit a poster and the committee will decide the winner. If you have any questions, please e-mail the committee!

Photographers can get in contact with models on the facebook group, by getting to know them on Tuesday at the Masquerade shoot, or by coming along to the Fashion Show rehearsals on Friday evenings. The poster must have at least 1 model from the Fashion Show in it! Deadline is the 26th Feb – good luck! :-)

Have a lovely week!

Newsletter! 3rd February 2010

3 02 2010

Hey everyone! I hope you all had a sparkly weekend and you’re enjoying today’s sunshine! :-)

We have some cool things lined up for you guys, starting with…..

Photoshoot:

A Masquerade Ball is being held on the 20th March in aid of leukaemia research, and we are going to have a Masquerade Photoshoot – the photos of which will be turned into posters to add to the decoration on the night so bring out those masks and ball gowns/suits! Those of you who wish to take part in this shoot will also be put on to the guest list that will allow you £2 off your tickets. We will let you know which day the shoot will be, and we will provide masks so don’t panic if you don’t have one yet.

Trips:

The area for the upcoming trip is called Dungeness. It is located in South Kent and is not that easily accessible by train or bus. Therefore we need to know those of you who are interested and whether or not you have a car and could help with transport. We have heard from a few people that they have a car so let us know if you are interested and whether or not you have a car so that we can get an idea on numbers! :-) Alternatively, if you are over 21 and have been driving for two years, you are applicable for mini bus training. This will allow us to take more people with us!

Remember, this trip is for both models and photographers as it will be a great place to have a photoshoot. The trip will be on the 13th Feb (a Saturday)

Hoodies:

Hoodies are nearly sorted! Hurrah! We should be able to confirm details by the next newsletter. As it stands, the hoodies are going to be grey with a black logo at the back, a small logo on the front, with your name and position/whether you are a photographer or a model. Do think about purchasing one as they are going to look cool and it’s a nice thing to remember your uni experiences by!

Models:

Unfortunately, there will be no more Tuesday meetings as this seems to be a bad day for everyone. In place of these meetings, we will try to organise more photoshoots which we will let you know details of by email as and when they are arranged!

The Fashion Show rehearsals are going really well and all you models taking part are doing a great job. We do have a couple more spaces left for people who have missed out on auditions and are desperate to take part, but we will be unable to consider anymore people any later than Friday. So if you know of any friends who wish to take part, tell them to come along to Eliot Hall, 6:30pm on Friday.

If you are involved in the Fashion Show, you need to be a paid member to take part! So get down to Mandela where you can officially sign up and pay the £5 membership fee.

Photographers:

Due to the lack of attendance last week, Tuesday sessions will be cancelled unless people state whether or not they will indeed be attending. So if you can ONLY make Tuesdays, let Mikey (mar35) know, but if there is not enough interest they will be cancelled. However, this week’s Tuesday session will still be happening.

This week we will be going over the basics of flash photography. Basically you will be learning how to make the most out of an on-camera flash if you do not have more than one flash/a trigger for off camera flash lighting. This will come in handy for the photoshoot that will be happening the week after!

Photo opportunity:

The Netball Society are looking for someone to take some promotional shots for the ‘Man of Kent’ competition that is held every year in the Venue. If you are interested, this is a great opportunity for you to build your portfolio!

If you would like more information, you can find their Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#/event.php?eid=256906808588&ref=ss Also you can contact the chairwoman Cait McDonagh at cm346:kent.ac.uk.

Competition:

Congratulations to Jonopye who won the ‘landscape’ topic! :-) Next week’s topic is ‘Winter’. Don’t forget to vote for your favoutire photo on the website.

That’s all for now guys, have a lovely week!

Now that term has started, we have some cool things to fill you in on…..

There will be a Re-Freshers Fair this coming Monday 25th, opposite Essentials, outside the drama building and the Venue from 12pm til 4pm! This is a great chance to go along and find out about any new societies or to re-cap on those available and of interest to you. The Photography and Modelling Society will have a table there and we’d love to see you! If anyone is free to lend a hand we’d greatly appreciate it.

We have been planning some exciting socials and photo shoots for all models and photographers for this term…! The first social will be next Wednesday 26th – more details closer to the time. Do come along and feel free to bring any friends!

Models:

For those of you involved in the Fashion Show on the 20th March, there is a meeting tomorrow (Friday) night at 6:30pm in the Peter Bird Room, Eliot. It’s important that you attend this meeting as we will be giving you information on the show, including the different sets we have lined up. If any of you have any friends who would like to be involved in the show but missed the auditions, bring them along.

Our normal meetings will resume next week, so come along to the Peter Bird Room, Eliot at 7pm where we will be considering some traditional modelling styles.
Photographers:

Workshops start back up next week and the first session will be learning about camera specs, such as mega pixels and lens range. All photography meetings this term will be in Eliot Seminar Room 1 on a Tuesday at 6:30pm and a Wednesday at 5pm.

We are going to get the contest board up with the winning photos on it and Mikey is going to get in contact with all the winners for their fill name! :-)

Trip:

There is an upcoming trip to London Zoo which any model or photographer is welcome to come to! It will be on the 6th March and there will be more details closer to the time.
