Welcome back
18 01 2009Welcome back guys, I hope you had a nice break!
To kick off the new term with a fantastic evening, Alex has prepared a social for Saturday (24th): ‘The plan is to start at Northgate spoons @ 9 – have a few drinks and then head to Girls & Boys at Studio 41. We’re aiming to get there before 10:30, as entry is only £2.50 for students – so dont forget your student cards people! And for those who cant make wetherspoons and have NOOO clue where Studio is – its on the same road as Chill, but its a few doors down to the left. Oooh and I thought we’d make the theme easy – STAND OUT. That’s just basically wearing bright colours people
and not just clothes – you can be creative with your makeup and accessories
So we hope to see all you models suited and booted on Saturday! ?’ The facebook page for this event is here.
The models will have their first meeting (show rehearsal) on Monday in the Missing Link room from 8 til 11. If you have any questions please get in touch with Josh.
The photographers’ first meeting is this Wednesday (21st) at 5pm in the Shirley Barlowe room. We’ll cover common problems (e.g. blurry pictures) and how to solve them quickly. You can download the Powerpoint presentation here.
The competition theme for this week is ‘Emotions’ and we’ll have a small prize for the winner! As usual, the only rules are that it has to be your own photo and that any depicted people consent to having the photograph published. You can bring a print, a USB stick or e-mail the photo to the society googlemail account. (Please note that this has changed, don’t email them directly to committee members anymore.)
Those of you who have not yet picked up their society hoodies, please get in touch with a committee member so that we know whose to bring to the meetings.
We also have some new photo opportunities for the budding photojournalists among you!
*Latin & Ballroom: “On the 14th of feb the latin and ballroom dance society is hosting the south of england dance championships in crawley and we are desperatley seeking a photographer. transport will be provided and whoever it is will be allowed to sell prints in order to make a profit. With 3000-4000 people expected thats possibly a large amount of money!” To get in touch with John Lamb, social sec, please contact the committee and we’ll forward you his contact details.
*BLW: “Hi there, My name is Damola Layonu. I am a student at UKC and the Assistant Coordinator of the society, Believers’ Loveworld (BLW). We are a Christian fellowship on campus. We are having an event in March called ‘The Real VIP’. It’s alll about showing people how special they are in God’s sight, and it will have a very glamorous and high profile feel to it. We want to request photo coverage from your members. We will have a red carpet at the event. It would be great if your members could take some photos outside on the red carpet and inside as well. I would like to arrange a meeting with you a.s.a.p to discuss this further and in detail. Please reply via [contact the committee for details]. Thank you for your help and cooperation. Kindest regards, A.O.Layonu.”
That’s all, see you soon!

Christmas photoshoot and social
17 12 2008
Since we got massive amounts of positive feedback from the last studio session, we decided to give it another go! This time we’ll meet on *THURSDAY* (18th) at *6PM* in KLSR4 (the same room as last time). There’s even a theme to this one! Yeah, you guessed it, X-mas. So get your Santa / reindier / angel etc gear out! We’ve got the room booked until 9pm. After that we’ll have a big end-of-term social. The Societies Federation has organized a social for all societies together, so this is a great opportunity to celebrate and meet some new people! It’s in the Lighthouse, and we should be able to get in for free. However, at the moment of writing, I have not yet received confirmation of this. Fabolous is performing in the Venue which might result in £10 entry tickets. But fear not, in that case our Social Secretary Alex has prepared a plan B, we’ll head to Alberry’s in town.
By the way, the hoodies will be ready by then, so come and pick yours up at the meeting (only for those who ordered one).
For the photogs, there’s no competition this week – more time to focus on your deadlines ![]()

Newsletter 01/12/2008
1 12 2008Hey all,
Another week has passed, and we have meetings this Wednesday.
Now I will explain the photographers first:
The contest this week will stay the same as the one last week which was ‘landscape’ mainly because you forgot to vote. A reminder, members are able to borrow society equipment (e.g. cameras, flash, studio system, tripod and accessories). If you want to use anything, just email Mikey at mar35@kent.ac.uk. Maybe I should have said this first but the meeting is at 5pm in the library, in the training room 301 (TR301), this room is on the third floor next to the computer room. There are signs about if you get lost or anything. In this meeting will be an initiation to digital post-processing. GIMP portable is the software that we will be using and not Adobe Photoshop. All the skills that will be learnt in this session will apply to all major image editing programs even though you can do the same things in Photoshop, for instance. GIMP (www.gimp.org) is FREE and it works on UNIX, Mac OS X and Windows. ‘GIMP’ Portable (http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable) works on Windows ONLY but it can be run from a USB stick or an external hard drive – which allows us to use it on University computers. If you want to play around with the program before the meeting (recommended), follow the instructions below. If you run into any problems please use the forums on our flickr group to ask questions (http://flickr.com/groups/uok/). Alternatively we’ll show you how to do it at the meeting. Instructions on how to run GIMP on university computers:
1. Go to one of the university’s public computers (e.g. in the library or the colleges) and log in.
2. Go to http://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable and download GIMP Portable. Start the extractor (GIMP_Portable_2.6.2.paf.exe).
3. Follow the installation instructions. When asked for the destination folder, click ‘Browse’ and go to Desktop->My Computer->USERNAME on ‘bodiam\Hbt’ (Z:)->My Files. USERNAME will be the login you used to access the computer. Click Install, wait, and then click Finish.
4. Go to the folder into which you installed GIMP Portable. Run GIMPPortable.exe. It will take a minute or two to load.
5. There you go, GIMP will now be available in your My Files folder whenever you log in to a university computer. If you would like to use GIMP Portable wherever you go, install it on a USB stick instead of the Z: drive. It should work on any Windows computer.
Now the models, we have a meeting, but only fashion show models will HAVE to attend. Attendance is MANDORATORY, I repeat MANDORATORY. The meeting is at 6pm, in the Charles Kennedy Room. Girls, make sure you bring your heels. The whole point of this session is for everyone to get a chance to team build, get to know each other, practice walking and posing, that sort of thing. This is a closed practice may I remind you, so only fashion show models and the fashion show committee will be permitted. This session will be loads of fun, like it always is…lol…anywho hope to see all you guys there, and you better be there or else
..jokes, but seriously…be there.

Printing
24 11 2008The models have another week off and but will have a meeting next week so make sure you keep that free, will give more information about that in the next newsletter.
Anywho the photographers are meeting as usual this wednesday at 5pm, this time in the darkroom. If any of youy have any developed negatives bring them along to this session. The enlarger will be used to make contact sheets and prints. If there is enough time we will also give ‘dodging and burning’ a try.
For the competition this week the topic is ‘landscape’. We have also found out about two photo competitions, they are the Photo Award and Perrot Photographic Awards. For any more details, visit the following websites: www.perrotphoto.co.uk/awards/ and www.thephotoaward.com. Please note that they both charge a participation fee.

Film screening
19 11 2008Our trip to the zoo was a success, we had lots of fun and great weather. You can check out the photos and join the discussion here.
I’d like to remind the photographers who took pictures at our studio session to upload them to flickr and post them in this thread.
The models are having this week off to gather some energy before the fashion show workshops kick in. Those of you who enjoyed the studio shooting might be interested in helping out with an inQuire photoshoot. If so, contact the IQ editor Laura Harrison at newspaper dot features at inquiremedia dot co dot uk.
Next week’s meeting for the photographers will be a film screening. We’ll meet in Grimond seminar room 3 at 5pm. I’ll bring a selection of photography related films and we’ll choose which one we’ll watch together. [Update: We decided to watch Annie Leibovitz: Life Through a Lens.] The contest topic for next week is Macro. The week after that we’ll make prints with the enlarger from your negatives, so it’s a good idea to fill a roll of film before then.
We have another photo opportunity with Unicef on Campus. These assignments are a great way to gain experience and get your name out there:
‘Unicef on Campus is going to be very busy with events this year and we were wondering if any of the photographers from your society would be interested in taking some photos of the events, which we will then send to unicef’s official site for them to put in newsletters/website etc. The next event that we will be doing is going to be in the venue, we have got a gig night. Unicef is hosting it, we’ve got a band to play and have the live music society getting involved with it too. It would be great to get your photographers involved in it too. The details for the events fo far are: 28th November – Gig in the Venue (genre: indie pop). 1st December – World Aids Day awareness. 12th December – Charity Christmas Fayre. Please let me know if anyone is available to do these for free. – Annie Galstyan, President of Unicef on Campus, kentunicef # gmail # com .’
In sitenews, there are some new links for modelling and printing in the links section.
